Rethink Outside

Rethink Outside, Blue Sky’s shared narrative initiative was developed in collaboration with funders, practitioners, and network leaders working at the intersection of people and the environment. It is designed to reach and influence new audiences with a compelling story that captures the breadth of the field and encompasses the myriad benefits of outdoor experiences.

Creating the Shared Narrative The shared narrative was developed through a multi-year process that engaged hundreds of stakeholders in listening sessions, surveys, interviews, and message testing. Deep listening and analysis by consultants at Seven November, Inc. resulted in the final shared narrative messaging.

The Story of Us Beginning in 2017, Blue Sky funders and partner practitioners and researchers have co-led the development of a shared narrative to help unify the field and engage new audiences to support connecting people with the outdoors and its many powerful benefits. This resource provides a preview of the new narrative which seeks to move Blue Sky members’ and partners’ individual and collective work from the margins to the mainstream, inspiring awareness and action from new audiences. This new narrative is centered on the field’s shared values for strong communities and an equitable, inclusive, diverse society. In uniting around this shared narrative, Blue Sky stakeholders aim to ensure that everyone has positive experiences outdoors and shares the joy, health, growth, and sense of community that come with it.Members and partners are welcome to use this document to share this work with colleagues and partners.
