Community Movement Commons: Land Justice in an Urban Context (Land Justice for Funders Series)
June 11 , 9:00 am – 10:30 am PDT

What does land justice look like in a rapidly gentrifying city—and what can philanthropy learn from communities already putting it into practice?
Join fellow funders on June 11 from 12:00 – 1:30 pm ET for Community Movement Commons: Land Justice in an Urban Context, an interactive webinar exploring a living example of structural repair through land sovereignty in the Roxbury area of Boston.
The Commons is an archipelago of three buildings and outdoor spaces stewarded by partner organizations, including Boston’s first community birth center focused on racial equity and maternal health. Grounded in Black and Brown community leadership in Boston, the Community Movement Commons demonstrates what it can look like to reclaim access to land—both indoor and outdoor space—in a rapidly gentrifying urban environment. Through collective ownership, movement partnership, and values-aligned capital, the Commons is creating space for healing, organizing, care, and community self-determination.
The webinar will feature:
- Hans How, Integrated Capital Officer, Kataly Foundation, who mobilizes integrated capital strategies to support impacted communities through the Restorative Economies Fund
- Jidan Terry-Koon, Head of Ecosystem Engagement at One Project, a key funder of the Community Movement Commons, focused on building a democratic, regenerative economy
- Nashira Baril, Executive Director of Neighborhood Birth Center, Boston’s first community birth center that will reintegrate midwifery to advance reproductive equity
- Jasmine Gomez, Co-Director of Radical Philanthropy at Resist, and an attorney and activist advancing equity through healing justice, legal advocacy, fundraising, and community power-building
Following an overview of the Community Movement Commons, panelists will explore the philanthropic shifts that made the project possible, the role of collective land ownership in fostering abundance and shared vision, and how funders can rethink capital, ownership, and partnership in support of community-led land justice efforts. Together, speakers will reflect on what it takes to move from scarcity toward long-term community stewardship and repair in urban contexts.
Community Movement Commons: Land Justice in an Urban Context is the second webinar in a 2026 Land Justice series co-hosted by Blue Sky Funders Forum, Elmina B. Sewall Foundation, Highstead Foundation, Resist, and the Maine Climate and Environmental Funders Network. This series highlights working examples of land justice in practice, featuring bold funders integrating land justice into their portfolios alongside the visionary community partners with whom they work. Participants will leave inspired to begin or deepen land justice practices in their grantmaking and be better prepared to turn conversation into aligned, collaborative philanthropic action.
This webinar is open to funders only, and the recording will be shared with registrants.
