Between 2015 and 2019, Blue Sky Funders Forum and Environmental Grantmakers Association (EGA) members gave over $484 million to support environmental literacy and connections between people and nature.
Environmental Literacy Funding 2019 Snapshot
- In 2019, $115.8 million was given to environmental literacy; an increase from $97.8 million in 2018 after a small dip from $104.8 million in 2017.
- 33 Blue Sky members (out of the 163 total funders) gave 44% of the total environmental literacy funding tracked in this report.
- In 2019, a total of 2,251 environmental literacy grants were given across 1,744 grantees.
- In 2019, the School Age audience group continued to receive the largest share (42%) of environmental literacy funding.
- In 2019, the School Age audience group continued to receive the largest share (42%) of environmental literacy funding.
- Funding to the All Ages group declined the most since 2017.

Tracking the Field is an initiative of EGA. Blue Sky’s Tracking the Field partnership with EGA began in 2016 and monitors and analyzes grantmaking for environmental literacy among U.S. environmental funders. In partnership with EGA, Blue Sky published its third Tracking the Field report on environmental literacy giving in February 2022, summarizing 2019 grants. Blue Sky members have access to a searchable database of all environmental literacy grants on the Blue Sky website.
