Cohort: Trust-Based Philanthropy With A Racial Equity Lens (Nov 2023 – March 2024)

November 29, 2023, 10:00 am - March 4, 2024, 11:30 am PST

To deepen our community’s understanding of equitable grantmaking practices and their intersection with racial equity and justice, we are excited to share a new cohort-style learning opportunity with you: Trust-Based Philanthropy With A Racial Equity Lens.

One of the core values of a trust-based approach is to work for systemic equity, which should include a focus on racial equity. And while trust-based philanthropy and racial equity work are not identical nor interchangeable, both work hand-in-hand to advance a vision for a more just and equitable nonprofit sector. In short, a racial equity lens is needed in order to fully embody trust-based philanthropy, and trust-based philanthropy is a helpful framework to actualize racial equity within philanthropy.

Beginning this month until March 2024, join peer funders for a 3-part workshop series to explore the relationship between the two approaches, to understand why a racial equity lens is needed (the issue), what a racial equity lens is in a trust-based approach (the answer), and how to operationalize it (the implementation). Following each workshop, you will join a cohort of Blue Sky members actively working to understand and operationalize these concepts within their grantmaking organizations and in the space of outdoor access and experiences.

We believe that every organization can make meaningful, incremental steps toward equitable change in philanthropy, and in Blue Sky’s cohort, we will workshop the challenges you face to implementation together.

This virtual program includes a total of six gatherings: three educational workshops (90 minutes) complemented by three corresponding cohort-based discussion groups (60 minutes).
